What is this sensor for and where does it go?! (pics)

Hi guys. I noticed this sensor dangling from behind the front bumper the other day...

I had a look around and couldn't find any other place for it other than a hole in my front bumper, so I clicked it into place, like so:

Is this the correct place for it? Can someone tell me what it actually does? It must have been hanging there since I removed my front bumper (about 2 weeks ago!)...hope I havn't damaged it...

Its the outside ambient temperature sensor. Not sure if thats where it goes on your car but normally in the front bumper.
