Bloodyspot on! Epic car Nick. It will be good to see what track times you achieve next year vs what you go this year.

    Just to clear something up...
I have a very dry sence of humour, the Fishing wasnt my cup of tea,
The views of some ( well one ) drive me round the twist, The world doesnt start and finish here on ASN,
There will be fast Haldex'd cars out there same as there may even be ( perish the thought ) a faster track A3.
This car will make for a very very fast track car, it was mega before the upgrade in power !
The collection of parts wisely picked have made for a true winner in the power game ,
The north south devide is only bridged by PM or email... i dont seem to get any replys though,
    "king Prawn"
Ive never met you... but think most people would be soooo happy having a father who enjoyed this kind of thing... my dad thinks im stupid spending everything on a car.
My hat ... i take it off to you two,

Thanks Paul, the fishing was childish I agree, we all have our silly moments.

I couldn't agree more though about Big_Al, it's absolutely awesome that my dad is so cool and so involved with all of this.

I am very lucky to have my dad on board to share this with, without him none of this would ever have happened. The whole project was his idea in the first place

Now you're talking. A nice light 205 (mine was 750) with 250 n/a horses, a proper diff and a decent suspension setup; that's a track car. I miss mine, although I only had 170 but a Quaife box and Jenvey's made it awesome fun. Might get another...

This is the part everyone is a little jealous about because lets face it my dad is not bothered at all and I can imagine most other's been in the same boat..

Simple solution is your dads just going to have to adopt us all so we can play race cars.

I fall in the same category as Prawn. My dad loves cars and is quite jealous of both the cars I have at my age, which is good. He also likes it because when ever I do anything to mine, as I'm more then happy to let him have a go in it!

Missed yesterdays posts but have briefly caught up. Not everything is down to 'fishing' just because it goes against the grain. I can't see anyone being unhappy that Prawns car made the power it did, their is no reason to be. The debate on whether he has chosen the best drive train to put that power down isn't fishing, it's just obvious that he is wrong but to finish one of the few serious posts I make on here: Congrats Prawn, and I'm looking forward to getting taken out in it when you come up to have a nosey around.

It's so obvious what it is. I know what it is, but given those things it is glaringly obvious.

You'll all be gutted if you don't guess it.

    Hey Chaz,

Engine mods are relatively simple to be honest, just a good and well thought out spec.

AGU stock engine, rebuilt with new rings and shells, and DM forged rifle drilled rods
    Relentless manifold and downpipe
    B5 V2 80mm TIP
CR turbo's ko4 hybrid rebuilt by Beachbuggy, B5/BB ported hotside, RS6 turbine clipped 7 degrees, 2283 comp wheel, 1 bar actuator
Wellycooler core with custom 2.5'' pipework
    Bosch 440's with VR6 MAF
    And the R-tech custom mapping.

I think that's all that's gone into the power side of things, it's got a paddle clutch and an LSD to cope with it, but that won't alter output, just how much of it I can use

I have, and here it is!

The thing that all the above random parts have been collected for, is something I have wanted for YEARS since I first saw one on a race car many years ago.

It won't make the car any faster, or lighter, but it will make me smile every single time I use it, because it's just so damn cool.

I bought a VW Motorsport Billet alloy shifter

The unit seems really nicely made, both the pivots are on bearings, and it has an awesome little lift collar to engage reverse.

The only complaint I could find about these, was the lack of self centring on the lever from left to right, so I decided to try and come up with a solution.

That's where the tractor brake pedal return spring comes in.

it'll be fitted over the main shaft like this:

But in between the unit body, and the main left-right pivot body, with 2 small dowel holes drilled for the tangs:

With careful placement, that should see the lever springing back to centre nicely.

The reverse lock out is also really cool. In normal operation, you push left for first, the these adjustable stops hit this pin like so:

Then you pull this little lift collar:

Which pulls this bike gear cable:

And the pin slides back, allowing you to move further left for reverse!

The welding on the alloy tower supplied seems strong enough, but it's not very pretty, so I'm going to attack it with a flap disc and some wet n dry, and paint the tower Porsche 8C6 orange to match the cage and things.

Cable wise, I've got a set of shift cables from a volvo S40 which are longer to allow me to position the lever where I want it, and I'll be making up custom cable stays from 3mm plate, and of course, painting them orange too.

The ball joints I showed earlier, will go on each end of the new cables, so it'll be solidly mounted at each end of the cables for a really tight shift without any rubber in there.

Taking the volvo cables, and cutting the ends off, you can run an M6 die down the rod end and cut on an M6 thread like so:

Then with the aid of an M6-M8 adapter, I can convert the cable ends to an M8 thread:

Then screw on my ball joints:

Sorted! If I need to extend the cables ends at all due to stay placement or anything like that, I also have some M8 threaded sleeves, so I can fit a sleeve to the M8 male end on the cable end, then use some M8 stainless thread bar to get the ball joint exactly where I want it and lock it out with lock nuts.

It's a complete experiment, and I'm sure it'll feel rubbish at first, and take considerable setting up to get it right, but I just love these shifters so much, so here goes!

I was looking at these after seeing the vid my mate took in Bills car a good few years back but figured it'd look a bit odd in a full interior'd car! He runs the SQS one I think, is that the same as this? USRT do them too:

AGU's have basic coils and a seperate power transistor pack (aka ICM) mounted on the airbox.

Later cars have coils with the power transitors built in.

If you want to convert the AGU to use the later coils you need to delete the ICM and rewire it directly to the coils.

ignition control module. Not something you need worry about as you don't have one!

me7.5 has 4 wire coils with built in amplifiers, the me3.8 has simple 'dumb' 3 wire coils, and a deprecate ignition amplifier (control module) that controls all 4 coils. These ICM units run very hot and can be unreliable.

Ots possible to splice the me7.5 coilpack look onto the me3.8 engine loom with a few clever connections, doing away with the ICM and modernising it a bit.

Mark has done it on his a4, although I think he's since gone the whole hog with an me7.5 conversion as well
