It's great having it stripped out isn't it? So much more lively, and it sounds great too!
Have you changed the steering yet? I found that made a nice difference to the feel of it

The difference is amazing ive removed all the sound deadening too so its very loud inside. mine was a 180bhp quattro sport to start so i think it may have the same rack as the TT and s3 cos the steering is very sharp.

Count how many turns you get from lock to lock mate, 2.7 turns for a quick rack, 3.5 turns for standard.

I think the tq will have a 3.5 turn rack. But annoying, as fitting a quick rack to a car with ESP will do strange things......

One advantage to having nothing in the back, is that there is SOOOOOOOOOOOOOO much room in there!

Our gear for new years eve took up almost no space at all!

    Chaps.

Does anyone know anything about the gear selectors/shifter units on these cars?

I know the older AGU's have a different cable end on the box, and cannot use the TT short shift because of this.

Is it possible to fit the TT short shifter onto the box? I can't imagine the output spline would have changed.

My plan was, to get a later gear selector from a newer car, to allow me to use the TT short shifter. The linkage on the car at the moment is terrible, there is so much slack it's just a joke.

Also, provided I maintain the anchorage points at the box for the cables to work, is there any reason why I couldn't bring the shift cables in through the bulkhead, and mount the shifter inside the car and slightly higher up for a more comfy change? I made an internal shifter setup for the Mini, which brought the gear lever right up high, and it's one of the best things I've done!

Thing is Don, I want the shifter higher up and inside the car. it's not a short shift I need really, it's a whole new gear selector and cables. the older AGU shifter cables can't be used with the later TT short shifters, which are only 20 from the dealers!

By getting a newer gear selector I should be able to use the TT short shift, and tighten up the linkage and move it higher whilst I'm at it

Prawn I had a look at the TT shifter mech on a 2000 TT today and it looks very similar to mine if not identical. If you send me a decent pic of yours I will have a compare if you like. I dont think you will get a definative answer though as I doubt its really been done. From what Iv seen it lookes like the lifter lever is on the bellhouse side of the shaft unlike the 6 speed

you could buy the forge short shifter, comes with the options of both cable ends. older type with pin and c clip type retainer and newer type ball and socet style then use which ever type you need, may cost a little more but easier way around it.
other option is to get the gear cable ends for the newer type cable from audi/tps

Thing is Kev, the actual selector unit inside the car is worn to feck, and has miles of play in it. so I want to renew that as well whilst I'm at it to tighten it up as much as I can!

Good to hear the ends can be changed over though, I thought they were integral to the cables!

yeah i noticed you wanted to replace the inside gear selector too, but unsure of what you currently had setup at the other end so was getting confused as to what you were looking at doing,
so tt quick shift, requires newer style cable ends??
then old style gear selcetor in car??

I want to get the newer style shifter inside the car too Kev.

the early AGU shifters seem to be really slack and wobbly, whereas later shifters from AUM engines seem to be WAY tighter and more notchy feeling. I want to modernise the whole lot. And then potentially reroute the cables in through the bulkhead so I can raise the shifter up inside teh car.

Having thought more about the cage situation, I think I'm now swaying more towards a bolt in FIA spec cage.

As much as I'd love a full weld in multi point, I don't have the time required to install one properly, and I'd hate to risk damaging the car in it's first few outings and having to scrap the cage. At least with a bolt in I'm able to move the cage into a new shell.

I've managed to source a really comprehensive looking bolt in cage from OMP through AHS motorsport, unlike most bolt in's, it's got a double rear diagonal, 50mm main hoops, and a double cross above the drivers head as well. It ties into the shell above the windscreen and on the B pillars as well.

I think that'll be the way to go for me

I dont really know how cable change works, but i cant see how rerouting would effect it, i'd assume as long as the relative push pull of the cable is maintained it should still work. Plenty of cable change box's have been fitted in mk1/mk2 golfs running 20vt conversions. As for the gear shifter problem, what gear box does the later 1.8t A3 run, if its the same box then i cant see any issue unless the cable connections at the box end are different

The cable ends are different on the later boxes. Both boxes are O2J codes, but the cable ends were changed to a clip on rather than a pin type.

The connection to the box is different, but it can be overcome by using the shift tower from a later box as well.

I'm not sure how the selector unit differs, but regardless of mileage the AUM gearchanges feel miles better!

Well, Nothing has been done to the car since the new year, but I've been very busy collecting bits for when I next go home!

In the last two weeks, I've aquired:

A rebuilt ibiza O2J gearbox, with a quaife ATB limited slip diff.

A full set of 256mm vented rear brakes from an S3, along with a spacer kit to mount to 2WD rear hubs. new discs and pads

A set of INA track density engine mounts

A set of Weitec Hicon GT coilovers to replace the Jamex crap that's on at the moment.

A poly bushed R32 front ARB

And a HUUUUUUUUUGE jetex cone filter. Even bigger than the 80mm neck ones Bill sells

Happy days, can't wait to fit it all in the next month or two!

It's already got Custard Code stage 2 on it Finesse!

Pushing out around 230bhp/260-270lbft as it is currently. Engine won't be touched until a new turbo goes on at some point this year. it's quick enough already really, just want to focus on making it safe and track worthy

REALLY looking forward to trying the LSD too, should make an amazing difference
