My sister's A3 had developed an annoying fault. Sometimes when she uses the rear wiper it will stay on even when she turns the stalk off, scraping across the dry window and getting lots of funny looks from other drivers as she drives for mile after mile with it flapping away. Yesterday when driving up the M6 she said it stated on for 20 minutes after turning it off.

Occasionally it will also start without her even touching the stalk.

I'm reckoning either a lose connection in the stalk or a dodgy relay. Anyone else had this?

Its the motor at fault. Took mine apart about 6 years ago when it was doing exactly the same thing. There is a copper disc inside the motor that rotates as the wiper moves allowing the sensors to know the wiper position. I cleaned the disc and then used some switch lubricant on it. Its been fine ever since. I probably used wd40 to clean it but having now discovered contact cleaner i guess that would be best!
