    Which "Winter Wheels" to buy and subsequent rubber choice for my 17"?



    Help needed.



    Can some people suggest some winter tyres for my 17" Avus alloys.

    "Summer alloys" are LM reps -(hangs head in shame) but as the roads get worse / salt and grit gets laid then I tend to swap so I can keep the LM's looking half decent for when the clocks go forward in Spring.


    Re: Tyre choice,

    I'm thinking 225/45/17 Y Falken FK 452 @ 75 each delv.

    Anybody had these? Reccomend any others for Winter type weather?

    I'd look at Something like the Dunlop WinterSport 3D, or Conti TS830.

    If they're winter wheels, then equip them with proper winter tyres.

    Sorry to confuse. I've got some Avus 17" from an S4 in Grey that I use in winter months. Not actual winter alloys.


    Looking at 215/ 40 / 17's too in either Toyo T1R / Yoko parada spec 2.

    Seems quite resonable price wise @ 75 per tyre also however people have said you might aswell not go fast in bad weather as there performance / soft compound / "dry tyre weather" only type.

    Ye, and if you only use them in the winter, then why fit summer tyres?

    Theres not a special type of wheel for winter tyres...

    Seen as your buying new tyres anyway, it seems like a no-brainer to fit proper winter tyres to them...

    What size are the LM reps?
    Falken 452's are ok tyres, not exactly a winter specific tyre

    You use the avus as a wheel to put on in the winter, hnce the term "winter Wheels" yes?

    I have kind of the same dilemma !

    but the Falken FK 452 are summer performance tyres so like aragorn said it wouldn't be a smart move to fit them as they wouldn't be any good at all !

    I think just an all round tyre would do or if moneys no problem then specialist winter tyres! bare in mind that we don't get a winter full of snow so for what its worth just get an all round basic tyre ?

    I'll start again.


    At the moment, Im running Yoko S306's on the 18" LM reps but im swapping the wheels / alloys because winter is coming. these are quite good (asemetric pattten?) esp in the wet.

    The 17" Avus will be brought out of the garage soon + used and therefore the tyre's for these needs replacing as there on the limit / need replacing to something good for the ****ty weather coming over in the next 3-4 months so your advice is needed on which rubber I need.

    Yes Byzan. I need some good brand / types of rubber for the ****ty weather coming up.

    not in the snow they're not, i had them on my last car (rear drive v6 omega) and they're great for the money in the fairer weather (so much so i've got them on my c5 quattro!) but not overly impressed in the snow.

    if you're swapping wheels for the 3-4 winter months why not go for a winter tyre or an all season at least? pointless buying soft summer performance tyres IMHO

    Rather than make a new thread im gonna post in here, does anyone have any suggestions for 225/40/18 WINTER / All season tyres at roughly no more than 100ea ? i cant find anything good at all.

    you'll struggle finding good winters in that size for that money imo

    225/45r17 is more sensibly priced with a few reasonable tyres around that price, but for the 18's your talking a bit more to get decent winter boots.

    Yea thats what i feared, pretty skint atm and my summers had it a long time ago, gonna have to just cope with a new set of summer i recon.

    im actually thinking about getting uniroyal rainsports, i know there arent great in the snow but as a genral all year round tyre. must be better in snow than say pradas or toyo proxes

    Falken 452s are a good fair-weather tyre. They're not good in snow. Had them on my B5 A4 and they like going straight on at corners.
    Get some winter-specific tyres for your winter wheels. That's what i'd do if I had the money. Uniroyal RainSport 2s all year for me.

    18" RainSport 2s cost me 106 each if I remember rightly.
    Perfect tyre for Aberdeen 3/4 of the year! Need snow tyres for the other 1/4!

    was driving my s3 tonight for the first time in the snow, was quite impressed with the grip considering the horrific nankangs that the last owner saw fit to put on!

    Just saw you are in Aberdeenshire too!
    My Uniroyals are better in any conditions than the Dunlop SportMaxx that were originally fitted to mine. Not a snow tyre, but if you can't afford a set for winter and a set for spring/summer/autumn then they're a good choice i'd say.
    A set of 17s with decent snow tyres for winter would be great, but hey, i'm always stuck behind a Clio or Beemer or summin anyway!

    Uniroyal rainsports are just like the goodyear eagle f1 gsd3s, i have them on my car and belive me id rather a set of nankangs or sunews, terible in the snow i had them on my mk5 golf last year. Due to the stupid deisgn they are also wearing out in the middle faster than the edges and yes i know this points to over inflation but i have checkec them monthly to make sure the pressure are correct, a mate has them on his mondeo and they are doing the same.

    I use 452's on my RSTT's... great value for money at around 65 each from Camskill but as said they are pretty useless in the snow... I have Yoko ice guard mud and snow tyres on my old Avus and just bought another set of Avus to bung some 'winter' tyres on of which I have no idea what as yet...

    My Yokos are absolutely superb in the snow but are not much good for much else but I live on a hill and snow tends to settle up here when it does come down even when the main roads are clear...

    So in conclusion, FK452's are a good budget all-rounder but ****e in snow... found this out at the beginning of the year after changing back from my yokos after the initial thaw only for it to snow heavy again... the difference was night and day...

    The Yokos went on tonight ;P

    Cheers tufty yea I saw the yokos in the other thread got a bargain there, I've got 2 avus wheels and 2 spare rstt wheels just need to sell them and buy 2 more avus and some winters.

    Yep genuine audis, to be honest i have 2 spanking new refurbs which i want for the car to swap out for the 2 on my car with minor kerbing but as ive just lost my job i could be convinced to sell.

    in theory you are more likely to cut through the snow with 215. your rolling radius would be quite different if you went 215/40 though, your speedo might be out

    17" Wheels = 43.18 cm diameter

    standard wheels ...
    225/45/17... so thats a nominal wall height of 101.25 mm or 10.125 cm
    so nominal rolling diameter diameter = 43.18 + 2 x 10.125 = 63.43 cm
    circumference = 63.43 x pi = 199.27 cm = 1.9927 m

    215/40/17... thats a wall height of 86 mm or 8.6 cm
    so nominal rolling diameter diameter = 43.18 + 2 x 8.6 = 60.38 cm
    circumference = 60.38 x pi = 189.69 cm = 1.8969 m

    If you were doing 90 mph whilst being chased by the police then (assuming your speedo is calibrated to your standard wheels)

    90 mph is 40.23 meters per second

    So your standard wheels would be doing 40.23/1.9927 = 20.19 revolutions per second

    Now i think your speedo is calibrated to the number of revolutions your wheels are doing so if you had a different rolling radius/circumference your speedo would still read 90 mph when your wheels are spinning at 20.19 rps

    If your 215/40s are spinning at 20.19 rps (90mph on the speedo) you would be covering

    1.8969 x 20.19 = 38.30 meters per second you would be doing 85.67 mph.



    btw, i know i worked this out the long way round but i am bored watching antiques roadshow


    Quick method ---> (new rolling diam/stock rolling diam)* speedo reading

    ( 60.38 / 63.43 ) * 90 = 85.67 mph QED
