Can i ask: My S3 - 02 plate (70k), has started playing up with clutch. The pedal, only when cold(worst first thing in morning) goes half way down before there is bite. This will last 1-3 miles or upto 5 minutes, generally untill warm. Then the pedal is back at the top. Having no problem selecting gears and the clutch itself does not seem to be slipping. I am lossing no fluid and have found no leaks. Should i be looking at master cylinder or is there something else i should look at first?
Thanks for any advice.

Ive just done mine it was the slave cylinder (could poss be master but as no leaks very unlikely)

Sadly its located inside the box so a big job(roughly 7hrs labour) may aswel replace the clutch at same time..

Try changing the brake/clutch fluid see if that helps first

Could try bleeding the slave cylinder as you should do this everytime you bleed the brakes at 2 year intervals. Doesn't always get done.

Does anyone know how or why exactly the slave cylinder fails? Could it be from not bleeding it regularly or is it simply the seals perishing?

S3BAM: Did you get the same fault half a clutch peddle then a full one, once warmed up, or did you lose it altogether? Did try and bleed using a one person bleeding kit. I had 20 psi on the brake refill and the slave cylinder bleed nipple in my hand and no fluid squirting out? Can this system be bleed that way? Thanks

Mine had the same symptoms about this time last year, with the pedal staying down for the first few minutes of driving. Gradually got worse over the next few weeks, getting longer before it came back up all the way. Eventually it got the the stage where the clutch would not disengage. I then went and got a new clutch, master & slave cylinders and all is smiles since then, albeit after an £800 bill!!

Cheers,

Hello mhr1972..

Exactly the same

I didnt bother to just change the fluid i just got gen vag slave cylinder from tps(£34 i think)

A fast road clutch from c g motorsport (£190) Clutch Specialists Manufacturer and Supplier of Handmade Clutch Kits

My m8 did the change charged me £120 labour...!!! he wont do another though (1st one didnt realise what a ***** job it was..!!!)

Just an option to delay the enevitable thats why i just had the work done..

FORGE TIP G.B CHECK GROUP BUY SECTION....

Just had mine done, similar fault to yours, if you were using the clutch often it would be fine but if you were on a duel carriageway for instance and hadn't used the clutch for sometime it would go slack and need pumping,

Turned out to be the master cylinder, so may not be to expensive...
