    S3 Engine Oil change options? and how to?

    Hi guys,

    The list of things to do on my S3 is just getting longer and longer but I have got myself into a spot of bother with money at mo and they will have to wait.

    I wanna make sure the essentials are done and having done just over 5k miles on the oil thats in it (which was changed by the garage I bought the car from because I asked them to) this oil was going to be used as a flush through as the oil before was very black. So my main concern is getting this changed for winter period.

    I could possibly do the change myself but I am not sure exactly how to do it, I know the basics as I have done work on my old Mini but as for tools, jacking up etc to be honest I get a bit worried that I may just make a complete mess of my pride and joy. My drive way at home is sloped downwards so I thought maybe face the car down and jack up front so its nearly level?

    1) So I could possibly do this myself and from what I've seen Quantum oil can be picked up for about 15 and filters about 4.29?

    2) I have found that National Tyres do the oil change for 33 with online discount. What do we reckon to this? Apparently they use 5w30 castrol edge.

    General advice and musings/experience would be much appreciated.

    quatum or castrol are both superb oils. 5w30 or 5w40 seems to be the way forward mate. I used quantum platinum 5w40 in mine

    Bump, bump bump bump bababa bump, bump it up!

    I'm tempted to go with the National tyres offer for 33 but it will have to wait till pay day.

    How much could I get the oil and filter for realistically?

    How much have you guys paid?

    I know what you mean! Got the same feeling. I know I'm probably being stupid its only an oil change!

    I just don' think I have all the tools for the Oil Change and buying them will prob be pricey.

    What tools are needed (big socket for sump plug/adj chain thing to remove filter??)???

    Audi use to charge 99 for a oil and filter change but its gone up to 149 Affordable servicing < Servicing with Audi < Owners area < Audi UK

    Most specialst charge around the 99 mark (guessing parts and 1 hours labour)

    Depends whether you'll use your tools again & again. Personally I like doing work on my own car because I learn about how it works, I know that the job gets done properly (to my obsessive compulsive standards...!) and it costs me less. Of course, I always get a specialist service once a year to keep the logbook stamped and always get a specialist to do work that I am not capable of, but I try to do it myself if I can. I've bought a range of tools to enable me to do the work (the biggest difficulty you'll get into is not having the right tool for the job) but I consider this to be an investment because when the day comes to sell my S3 (I am sure it will happen eventually :-(( ) I'll still have the tools for the next car.

    no special tools required other than a socket to fit the sump plug and a filter wrench which can be had for a cpl o quid at any motor factors its just a car at end of day , buy your oil choice , unscrew the sump plug drain then unscrew your filter ( these can be tight hence filter wrench may be required) half fill your oil filter and smear the o ring with oil then screw on hand tight no torque required replace your sump plug and fill with 4 ltr of your chosen run the engine a few mins then check the level and check for leaks at the filter and sump plug and top up as required , DO NOT OVERFILL , should be between 4.5 litre and 4.6 litre at oil and filter change

    Did my oil change today, bought some Castrol Edge 5w-30 but was only 4litres so had to buy another 1 litre bottle costing me in total 60 for oil!! Filter was about 5 from eurocarparts. Last oil change i did I put Car lube 10w-40 and my car ran terribly! So much smoother and quieter with the Castrol, starts better and some strange noises I had, seem to have magically disappeared.

    Took me about an hour and a half to do in total, an hour of that i was sitting indoors waiting for the car to drain. Car took the whole 5 litres too which surprised me.

    If you can afford it do it yourself, i love working on my car and learning new things. I’m almost pro with the amount of times my car has gone wrong and needed fixing lol

    if your car took 5litre m8 you have over filled it which leads to pressure increase and burst seals plus a whole lot of other problems check your user manual for correct level and check with your buggys oil level at cold if its high its not good so get some out .

    Duktor, ill check car 2moro morning but I did everything right. I filled the car with 4 litres and let it run for 5 mins. Then topped up accordingly and it took the whole lot! I checked it a few times after and it finished up just on the maximum mark. Dude you got me worried now, maybe was due to engine still being warm!

    I take it only way to get some out is via the sump plug?

    yeah Jonsey sump plug unless you have an oil suction device , dont be worried m8 wont cause any harm if u check n sort it out , your talking just under half a litre , there may also have been a discrepancy in the actual amount of oil in the containers so go by your dip stick reading if it looks ok cold then spot on , there has been talk about having to warm the engine before checking but tbh that sounds like a crock to me its a wet sump so should be checked cold .

    Ok, i checked this morning when engine cold and was dead on maximum mark. Went for a 15 min drive, left it sit for 5 mins with engine off and tested again, it still bang on max mark. So im pretty sure its not overfilled, phew!

    Could it be that 4.6 litres went in the sump, 0.3 in the filter and 0.1 discrepency from containers? Anyway, thanks for info.

    Thanks for the info so far guys some great stuff on here.

    Right well I will try and decide what to do but its gonna be either next pay day or the month after I would prefer to do it myself and use quantum (as its cheap but apparently very good stuff).

    Does anyone know if TPS (VW Parts suppliers) do deliveries? And if so how much?
