just bought a 8L S3 few hours worth of driving and heard a rattling noise coming from the engine, loud ticking, knocking kinda noise so i pulled over and stopped..

RAC reckon it could be something to do with the hydraulic tappets?

took it to an audi specialist anyway (central VW Audi) who reckon its the oil pump thats failed and pick up pipes got clogged with crap and starved the tappets..

so they are going to fit a new pump, oil line, run some engine flush and do a full oil service for £450 inc VAT parts & labour and they reckon that should solve the issue

never owned a 1.8T, let alone an audi, does this sound about right? seems quite expensive..

:(

help? !

yes mate £450s just about on the money..just gotta hope that will sort out yer tappet noise.

yeah sold as seen all that jazz, so got no comeback really!

still.. i just hope to god this sorts it!!

audi prices are steep!! :(

...still for the few hours i was driving it i love it!!!!

got lots of plans for it! is there a place for progress threads on this forum? haven't really had a good look round yet!

how many miles are on it? what sort of miles has i done between services? has it been on the "long life" servicing?

97 and serviced every 10k :)

If you bought from a dealer then there is no such thing as sold as seen as far as I am aware - any disclaimer would be invalid and probably illegal. See here for example. The dealer can tell you what is wrong and you can accept it, but otherwise there are various trading standards acts that ensure that goods are fit for purpose. If you bought privately then you are probably out of luck.

well thats good then.
strange that the strainers blocked up. hmmmmm. :?

aye private sale! unfortunately i know my law and i dont have a leg to stand on here haha!!

aye... it is strange...but we shall see no doubt! its at the garage now and should be fixed tomorrow.. il post up the outcome.. all the service history is audi too apart from the last service so im wondering if maybe its been done cheaply and the garage havent done the oil or something? still now i'm owning it its going to be serviced every 7-10k

right they did all this work.. found bits of metal in the sump...and still making a ticking noise.. so looks like its going to have to be stripped down and investigated.. im just praying it isn't going to be too expensive now :'(

unfortunately most people find this site through having problems with their Audi's :)

really hope this sorts it matey and welcome to the forum ;)

plenty of stuff on here to keep you going for years once you get the basics sorted

well this hasn't put me off and i still want to continue with the audi and mod it.. it wont change things and i will more than likely be spending alot of money on this on looking after it, performance parts etc

however the bad news today means this may be on hold for a while!!!

basically.. this didnt solve the problem

the oil pump had failed and had starved the tappets..

however there are problems with the top end now

so that was stripped down today and they found that:

the cam followers were shagged.. along with the turbo boost pipe (started to perish)
the cambelt tensioners and belt etc needed changing
headgasket would be changed..
waterpump etc
full clean down & full service etc

with labour looking at £1350 bill then plus £450 for the oil pump etc

is this right? :sos:

Im now kacking my pants , I bought my 126k s3 last week and have threw a few sheckles at it since , so far with oil n filter tyres n timing belt im about out of spare wonga , are the amk engines bad for clogging up as far as i know it was run on audi long service until 103k and no servce record since , Dont get me wrong there is no problem with oil or water loss or a mixing of both , would an engine flush be advisable ? ive used wymess on a couple of high performance bikes before and they both sprung oil leaks after hence im not keen ???

sorry to hear about your woes Rob

Nowt wrong with AMK engines (mine used to be one LOL....), its Audi's variable servicing that kills them... 20k+ between oil changes on a turbo charged 'performance' car??? insane!!!

I did do an engine flush not long after I got mine... used Wynn's engine flush IIRC... only prob I would say having had the sump etc off mine to 'do some work' is its not so much the sludgy deposits that engine flush traditionally is used to remove but the baked on crap than then flakes off and bungs up the oil strainer thats the problem....

Engine flush won't hurt but just make sure you drop the oil and filter far more regularly... I do mine every 5 or 6k these days... oil is £20 to £30 depending what you get and where you get it, oil filter about £4 and a new sump plug £1... no brainer IMO and really not difficult for anyone to do at home...

<tuffty/>

Don't want to scare you but have you had the big end bearings checked as well?? Having just stripped down an engine with a blocked oil pickup that threw a rod I would I get them to check them as well, as if the heads been starved of oil the the crank journals would have been also.

its gonna be a pricey job alright!!

im going down to the garage now to see what i can negotiate.. turbo is fine thank god.. hadnt been replaced too long ago anyway!

im just praying once all this is over il have no more issues!! i hope not though seeing as the whole car would of been apart in front of a audi vw specialist mechanic!

just very annoying that its almost 2k i could of spent elsewhere on other stuff on the car!
