    Effin' pile of shi...........

After finally managing to start the car today, it was running fairly rough so I decided to run a diagnostic and found a few really odd issues as follows:

Voltage reading high on cylinder 2 - twice as high as the other three.
MAF reading all over the place.

Ok, so, I swapped the coils packs round - still same voltage fault. Changed the MAF, still same erratic readings!!!

I'm now completely stumped as VAG COM says there are NO FAULTS!!!

Another interesting thing found - switching between stock map and revo makes bugger all difference so I'm beginning to think that the revo map is causing all the problems!

Have a look at your plugs after you have tried to start it, sounds very similar to my issue and mine turned out to be a cracked head

your stock map is another version of the Revo software so prob not a fair commentb(as in its Revo's version of stock rather than the proper one)....hope you get it sorted mate

you prob have done this already....have you checked the wiring going to the coils?

Earths... as mentioned in your other thread mate, you are having quite a few electrical issues at once it seems... earthing problems can contribute to this... sounds like wiring probs from what you have been saying...

Take the airbox out and underneath that you will see a black panel which runs from the strut brace and curves under the airbox. If you take the panel strip off you will find a wiring loom in there which runs to the battery. I had problems with mine a while back, i don't know how the wires got bodged but my mechanic was clever enough to re-do the damaged ones and solder them up! Car was perfect after that.

When this happened my car wouldn't start at all. I had it on vag-com which brought up many faults! Coilpacks 1 2 3 4 high voltage blah blah what you have, N75, MAF, Earth something something etc... Sounds like the same crap i had!

The coil pack wiring seems to suffer greatly from heat. they get baked upthere above the turbo.
I would go checking all the earths too. and the secondary fuse box ontop of the battery too.
I also had the problems of a plug getting tired... as in the metal inside the plug which is ment to be springy and touch the pins on all the electrical connections around the engine bay had gone loose. So there was a hit and miss signal . There for me was two options... use a very small screw driver to pull these pins back together so they connect tightly when plugged on.

Thanks for all the useful advice. If it ever stops raining I'll get outside and have a look.

One thing I did notice yesterday after changing the spark plugs is that the coil pack plug on number 2 cylinder (the one with the issue) has the little clip broken that keeps it on - maybe it had worked it's way loose and was causing some form of short?? I'll be plugging it back in to VAGCOM again tomorrow so I'll let you know how I get on.

Speaking of earthing... has anyone tried this ??? Waks Wide Web i'm getting a slight hiccup from the engine every now and then when on part throttle and very slowly increasing speed ... if i go full bore it's not there and if i leave it on cruise control it dosn't do it so i'm thinking of doing this as a way of just bolstering up the ignition system... if it was a missfire am i right in thinking vagcom would show it up ?? as it's showing no faults..... also wondering if the MAF maybe due a clean as it's de-meshed and on a K&N filter...

Nope! It seems to be running a lot better with the new plugs but we can't work out why the maf is all over the place and cylinder two is twice the voltage of the other three!

It'll be fine, even with my lowering spring - yep spring!!! Only managed to get one on tonight courtesy of it getting dark too quickly and euro car parts supplying the wrong flipping top mounts!

Note to self - drive very slowly!

We're going to do the other spring and top mount tomorrow night. We weren't actually going to fit the H&Rs but Iain couldn't find his spring clamps and we couldn't refit the old spring as I couldn't get the nut on. Simple solution, fit the shorter H&R spring!! The knocking noise was a shot bearing!!!
