Hi there does anyone know the gearbox code for a Audi a3 1999 1.6?

If it is your car or you can access it, check the sticker in the service book and/or the sticker on the boot floor, should give you the gearbox code on there.

Failing that, check on the gearbox casting, pretty sure it is stamped into the cast towards the rear from where the shift mechanism enters the 'box, u would probably have to remove the airbox to see that though?

im pretty sure theres only two types, and it just matters for you to get the one that you have, you can find which one it is from the colour of the like plastic cap on the side of the gearbox, the bit with a vw logo, mine was green, im pretty sure its this because this is what i had to do to get the correct one when mine broke 3 months ago...

Ahh thanks for the information,
i sourced one on ebay, the persons doing it for a £100 saying its in good condition but this is a bit cheap isnt it?
How much would one cost in good nic?
Thanks

there are loads of 'reconditioned' ones on fleabay for about the 500-600 mark.
I would prefer to go for a recon'd one. Especially if there is no surcharge as you could then get a price for having yours recon'd and sell it on?
it's an option anyway.

Having recently replaced the gearbox in my S3, if your the seller provides the ancillary sensors check they all work and none of the wire is stripped leading from the sensors/remove them all and use the ones you know are working from your old box.

If your stuck for a good company, mine came with a 90 day warranty from a company up north called motors in motion, specialists in dismantling VAG cars they were helpful and prompt (next day delivery).

Thanks guyz,
Basically i have located one pretty cheap from a private seller,
he said the engine has gone on his car
and he doesnt really know anything about the parts
so should i risk it,
Ive had a look around a used one for a 1.6 is around 200 mark but this one is way cheaper.

so should i risk it

haha mate, you are asking people on here if you should part with your green!
At the end of the day it is completely and utterly a 50/50 gamble buying unproven parts like that 2nd hand.

Buy it IF YOU WANT TO, and for what it is worth, I genuinely really hope it is A-okay and works out for you. worst that happens is that it isn't and you do the work over again.

ive got a gearbox at home mate from a 68,000 mark 4 golf which i briught for my 1998 audi a3 .got a reciept as well.let me know £150

p.s poayed 300pounds for it. and i havent used it as it was the driveshaft that had broken.its a tank i need it gone sittin in my room.
