timing maybe ?

i got a gunson vacumm gauge which i used on my car, it was reading that my ign timing is out, i asked my mechanic he said the ign timing can't be adjusted as its all done by sensors.

my car has white smoke (dunno what this is) but i'm not losing any fluids what so ever.

when on idle the car shakes/judders very slightly. what would this likely be ?

the ign timing or the cam timing ?

Sounds like a missfire, but you should get the car vagcomed to be sure.

its not a miss fire, i would hear if it was miss firing. its had new plugs and leads

VAGCOM mate.... get it logged... seeing as ignition is ECU controlled which in turn is defined by the software then I very much doubt timing 'is out'.... timing can be pulled of course but without logging it would be near impossible to diagnose and pretty unlikely on a non turbo car tbh...

White smoke is water... possibly condensation on initial start up and if you are not using water (have you checked the oil for white foamy deposits?) and it goes after a while then I doubt its anything to be too concerned about..

Idling problems and juddering could be a vacuum leak... while your car is non turbo it still uses a MAF and therefore leaks in the intake/vacuum system will still make the engine misbehave...

I not not familiar with the 1.6 engine so can't really tell you where to start but I would check anything that doesn't carry water for splits etc including the PCV system as any rubber hose carrying oil is going to split at some point in its life...

coolent is fine, flushed and replaced last week.

no cream in the oil. so HG aint going.

I would suggest you have a look on the VCDS/VAGCOM forum on ASN as there is a map/list of members who have VAGCOM (or VCDS as its now know as) that may be able to help or you can take it to an independent VAG specialist or of course purchase the software yourself... more details are on the VCDS forum (click the forum link at the top when you have read this and scroll down until you find it)

I agree with Tuffty about getting it checked with vagcom but i wouldn't rule out the HG totally even if there is water isn't mixing with the oil, get your expansion tank tested for hydrocarbons, quick, cheap and easy way to rule out the HG before you spend £££'s on other things that are ok. Personal experience
