    you should have EDL

    electronic locking diff

uses the abs sensors to detect slip then brakes the appropriate wheel to reduce slip.

vag stuff has had it since 96-98 onwards. the S4 had it front and back so i bet youve got it too

As Matt says, uses steering angles and abs sensor and yaw angle sensors (no sure if the S3 has yaw angle sensors) to distribute power between the front and rear and brake individual wheels.

s4 had an older fashioned torsen. 60/40 natural rear split and could shuffle power upto 90% in each direction.

haldex is definately more fancy i suppose its questionable whether its more effective *shrug*

as for LSD. you need a field and some donuts!!

Haldex 4WD is more tyre friendly than torsion/permenant 4WD, its pretty effective on most normal powered cars but certainly on higher power cars the performance controller would be the way forward as I can catch the thing out on occasion...

I think it needs to be pointed out that Haldex is a clutch and not a diff.

Haldex is the electronically controlled hydraulic clutch mechanism that controls drive to the rear diff... you could (in theory) remove the haldex unit and connect the prop direct to the rear diff but wouldn't make for a very nice drive without a centre diff/torsion wotsit me-jigger...

right this is bugging me now. lets get to the bottom of it

    Haldex is a company
Haldex Traction AB is a division of the Swedish manufacturing company Haldex AB. It specialises in the development and manufacture of All-Wheel Drive systems

a 4wd vehicle can have a centre differential to apportion torque between the front and rear axles.

what you call haldex is really a Haldex Traction LSC multi-plate clutch with ECU electronic control, acting as a center differential

    as said its a clutch

and to the op, no LSD fitted to S3 as std, although its posisble to add one to the gbox which would work on the front wheels

Interesting read despite referring to the haldex as a differential but it is still a clutch system...

The max torque the rear diff can handle I think is about 50% after that it would probably destroy itself. Hence the power distributions even with the performance controller you can not get anything above 50% to the back.

The question is what would happen if you remove the front drive shaft? Silly I know but surely this would turn it into a RWD! As the ecu detects permanent slips on the front. ; )
