    Drilled airbox

I've had my s3 for about a month and a half and I wanted to put a green cotton air filter. So I go to check what air filter I have in my airbox and I find its a K&N filter that looks pretty new, I take it out just to give it a once over and I find this.

This seems completely OTT surely this is making the intake temps soar?

I imagine I'm going to need a completely new airbox, are the stealers the only way forward or does anybody have any bright ideas?
I would pop down to the breakers yard but I dont imagine many breakers will have a s3 airbox knocking about.

A lot of people over on the TT forum do it, they call it the "WAK BOX" mod, they seem to rate it, who ever did that though to your's cocked it up, the holes should be as far from the engine etc as possible, i.e. near to the wing or whatever air intake you have.
The airbox will cost a bomb from the stealers, just buy a second hand one if the holes bother you, any s3/tt 225/lcr airbox will fit.

I was i thinking of smoothing the airbox this weekend but I guess not lol.

Surely any if there are any gains in airflow they'll be conteracted by what i imagine will be higher intake temperatures?

Your acting as if the intake temps are going to be throught he roof, have you seen the standard air feed, its perfetic, dont forgot the air sucked in has to be passed through a red hot turbo, the intercoolers are there for cooling.
It your bothered about the AIT then fit a larger 4" cold air feed from down at the front of the front bumper and fit a FMIC, then you'll be fine, could also fit a phenolic gasket to the intake manifold, bill seel's them for around 60-70 i think.

Very true and if its not making any negative impact then I'm not too bothered. I only mention the intake temps as i thought that these were the main reason why induction kits are not generally reccomended for the s3 as any increase in airflow they offer is negated by the temperature of that air.
I of course could have that wrong lol.

I know that matt but i mean i few holes arnt going to cause a massive difference, i know how hot the under bonnet temps can get, when i'm sat in traffic i can see the heat escaping from under my bonnet from the rubber strip i cut away.

A couple o holes like that will do nothing really. OK, may suck a spot of warm air in, but meh.

If you're that bothered and want a quick fix, may I suggest Duck Tape? That's what I did with my quad's airbox - sweet as.

I like it though and would of suggested the same. Every tool kit should have duct tape, electrical tape and zip ties!

When monitoring my ambient air intake temps at the ring two weekends ago I saw 67 degrees, so under the bonnet temps will be a bit higher than that!

Dane, do you have VAGCOM so you can do some logs? I'd be interested to see what gains can be had by the swiss cheese air box as I got 3bhp and 7lb torque just from smoothing out my airbox.

Ive been borrowing the Snap-on diagnostic machine that my friend uses at his garage, I'm going over to his later to get some post remap g/s readings, I will tape up the holes and see if I can get a difference. Is there anything other than g/s I should try and get a reading for?

Ok I'll try and do those too, unfortunately the snap-on is a stand alone piece of kit so it doesn't give spreadsheets that are easily postable so I'll try and record as much data as I can.

Standard CAI and standard panel. All I did was smooth the box top and bottom.

or why don't you use heat reflective tape and glue it on? That's what I'll be doing soon in a bid to try and reduce the air temp in the airbox as mines always hot when I touch it after a run..... Just another option but a lot more expensive then masking tape!

or even a heat reflective plate shaped to go under and around it. the possibilities are endless lol you could really get carried away trying to reduce intake temps

by the time a turbo engine eats the air it is going to be 20+ degrees anyway......cold induction, benefits N/Aspirated engines better

I would say a large cold air feed would be better than cheese grating your box. Cold air is denser afterall so whether the turbo heats up the air or not more oxygen will be getting in. I run a standard air intake just now and its alot smaller that the bore of the turbo so cant be great.

anything you can do to get it cooler is great ..but on a turbo engine by the time its gone through through the inlet its 20-30 degrees, a good ic like mine sorts that out ....early 20s all the time...lol
n/a engines benefit better as it is direct
