s3 vs escort cosworth

I don't think it's a case of puting the s3 down it just ain't that fun to drive as other hatches
I love the s3 but sometimes it can just be boring

Very clever marketting back in the day meant that the youth of back then who now control what we see in the media continue to rave on about the cossworth and portray it in a legendary way.

I only look twice at them when they drive by because they are so rare (on the roads).

Some would say Audi dont do hot hatches, others would say they made poor hot hatches. Its a very broad term. A 106 GTI is a hot hatch...completely different car to the S3.

I thin the bottom line is this, they WAS and STILL ARE Iconic cars that every teenage boy and some girls dreamed about owning but could not afford to. The majority of RS Owners Club member are Guys in there 30`s that Own them because they always wanted one as there first car and now can afford to own and appreciate them. They are worth there weight in Gold for the mentioned reason`s.
The S3 is a great car and no-one is disputing that, But i would hazzard a guess that 90% of owners of them on here only own them for 2 reasons, One because they look good on your drive and are fast, Secondly because for the same money as a newish Corsa you can buy a S3. Hmmm Corsa Power for 6K or S3 Power for 6K.
As i said before and what other members have said, Audi`s are Famous for losing money in value and break the bank to keep running. But when they are 20 - 27yr old how much will they be worth?
You will always get the die hard fan of S3 and the die hard fan of Ford RS and upon looking at piston heads today its clear there are far more S3`s for sale so any chav can buy one for little money but its much harder to find a RS Cosworth because they are now rare / sort after.
RS Cosworth (94) S3 (184)

As i said before, S3 drives buy and no-one cares, Ford RS Cutom mk3 Drives buy and people turn heads.

Anybody who claims to not at least look at one of these fords twice...
Realy isnt in the right disscusion,
They are classics and loved by the mass's
A good point was made... i cant remember by who, but Audi dont realy do a "hot hatch" IMO
But nobody can say they dont make some fine and fast cars,

Simply not true, well not around here anyway.

Agreed, most modern chavs do gorp at mine more often than not:)

So what exactly is a hot hatch, for one day only paul give us all the benefit of the definition please:)

Really couldn't have put it better myself:)

And I've tried haha

I almost bought a Sierra Cosworth before my S3, biggest dissapointment to drive ever. Drove like a bag of poo so I walked away & I've had old cars before so am used to quirky things.. maybe I just got a bad one? But I don't understand the whole Ford thing myself, why on earth they are worth so much still I will never know ??

I'm starting to fall in love with my S3 now I have to admit, I've sorted the suspension & it transformed it totally = a much better drive. Next is getting it chipped. It's no Evo (which I had before) but it puts a smile on my face now when I drive it :)
When I sold my Evo & parked the S3 on the drive the local 'yoofs' went past & commented " He's sold the Evo & got an Audi !" So I put them straight the next time & told them it's the S3 model... went right over their heads, not a ferkin clue what it was, so no, the S3 doesn't quite have the cult following of the mitsi or fords, lmao..

How many of you have driven a good series 2 escort rs turbo ? a escort cosworth big turbo version?
I have,
Thats why i feel they should be deffended. The power delivery is much more encouraging and in the cosworth at least the handeling gave so much feel and feed back,
Honestly i think about a dozen people other than at shows and such, have actualy looked twice at the car.
My car IMO is a good example of an 8l S3 in a colour i dont see too many in. so it should be a good reference...

Each to their own realy,
But In my honest opinion to slate the RS Cosworth cars and still to claim to be a car enthusiast is a bit ritch.

Escort Cosworth is an iconic legend without a doubt.

And its roots are in the older models.
Maybe the saphire was a bit of a marmite car but the old RS500 was what i saw on TV as a child... and i loved it

I've driven a S2 RS Turbo, that had 180bhp and a 3 Door cosworth with 320bhp and must say i loved them both.

I wouldn't have a 3 door as there far to big and i wouldn't have a RS Turbo as i just don't feel safe in them

The S3 has all the above and more

Yeah my uncle owns one the power delivery is excellent and the feed back through the steering is excellent too so easy to control and very fast
I love thos cars my uncle never let's me drive unless he's in the vehicle is well if I ever damaged it my life would be over
there one of the best cars ever made

What about the complete lack of room in the back of an S3?
each car has good and bad points. The escort cosworth has a very shallow boot , BUT when you have love for a car... you see past the down sides.
Off the mark an escort cossie would leave an S3 of the same power for dead.
Probably for the reason of the way they use the power they have.
Swings and roundabouts realy.
But if im on a swing, I dont slag off the roundabout

MY old Series2 Escort RS Turbo was superchipped to 195Bhp with upgraded Intercooler and now i own a audi thats 192Bhp and i can honestly say the Series2 Escort RS Turbo was much quicker and Felt higher Torque. The Recaro Seats was very comfy and a much loved car. I would still own it today if i hadnt have sold it to pay for the wedding and a down payment on a house (back in 1997)
This thread will run and run as Ford lovers will say teh Rs is a better more iconic car and the S3 owners will say the S3 is the best thing in the world.

Here is a funny thought. Ford Cosworth engines Have powered F1 cars in the past and even Today. Unlike Audi engines..lol

why not compare the Ford to an RS2, interms of performance, reliability, build quality and icon status?

Its true though. In my mind the best cars have come from motorsport so homoligation cars which the Escort Cossie is (correct me if im worng).

Cosworth is the tuning specialist for Ford, Audi dont tend to race in categories where they need to produce a number of road cars so they can compete in that certain class so thats why Audi dont tend to have very memorable/legendary cars. Everyone always remembers the Audi Quattro blasting through the forrests etc, a homoligation car so Audi can do it but they dont need to. Its more a marketing thing with Audi, having a cars for every class (supermini (A1 coming out), hot hatch, estate, off roader etc).

Homoligation cars and designed by race teams not normal engineers/designer, thats why they tend to be rather special as these are the people who know exactly how to make a car fast.

If they are that good sell the Audi and get one...simples

Or buy both. An Audi as a status symbol and a RS for pure driving experience that turns people heads.....

A fiesta and a v10 audi?
Now its just gone past the stupid mile marker!
I hold on to the audi as im stubern and actualy want to make the audi what i wanted it to be...
I would take my previous car over the audi in a second. BUT things happen and take these things from us.
Audis propper rally car is above any ford ive ever seen BUT i dont see anything like that out on the road.

Wonder if Cosworths latest adventure will be as popular as the Ford of old. Ive no doubt it will be many times better (not hard these days) and even less doubt that it wont have the same following. Ford enthusiasts are stange, they even think a focus 1.4 is amazing. Theres probbaly several tucked away in garages right now juyst incase they become future classics. Polished every 2 days and with mirrors under the car so you can see its never been used in its life. Great.

An unused ford is always going to be worth a fortune.its the only way the components won't wear so rapidly:)

Sorry dude but im all for some old RS's and that but most Fords are defiantly not stunning.

Not being harsh here but if it was totally std you may have had a chance as you did. HOWEVER most mildly even tuuned ones would have wiped the floor with you...

Mine runs 500+hp and is unbeaten yet in 'fun' i've had...

Maybe i'm biased but i know mine ran a 12.8 @ pod with 400hp, not been back since as my engines only just back in....

since we are talking classic, if i had to go classic i would go Mercedes 190E 2.5 16V manual.
thats a stunning classic

oh the one you posted in the picture is an evo1 hence the wheel archs and the rims

i just love this car...i even bought a set of those wheels lol that i keep in my garage

I remember her having an Audi convertible too? So what?

Reptor, i have already explained why the S3 wont be as classical as the old RS's....why yoo no risson!!

this is really funny this thread as the Ford boys are putting up a fight against the Audi lads when there really isnt a difference in opinion really.... the Ford is what it is, it does some things very well and was made a classic by the market appeal, lack of hot hatches and various other factors at the time. The S3 is a much newer car amongst many more differing types of hot hatch and so will never have that status - like ive already said, can someone name me a hot hatch of today that will be a legend???? although i would still catagorise the S3 as unique even in this day and age because of the amount of things it does really well - interior is almost 2nd to none IMO, how many Quattro/4wd cars are there of the S3 era??? (i cant imagine wanting another 2wd) - and yes it costs a lot to run, or does it? a lot of the people whinging about the costs have gone all out and spent thousands trying to get more performance, standard you dont have much more to service than any normal hot hatch (haldex!!)

so what the hell are we deciding now?

(my bee was in my bonnet cos some plebs decided the S3 wasnt a hot hatch :p i think we've enough evidence)

172 and 182 will be iconic, maybe the megane thing too. obviously the focus rs

4wd isnt actually a good thing
