Found this link on another forum, and thought it might interest a few people.

Apparently they modded this car to the max to see how long it would survive on standard internals. As they had a ready built uprated engine ready to go in when it did go bang /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Running that much boost with standard turbo and 100bhp shot of NOS, im not suprised it let go!!!

how were they getting 330bhp and 380ftlb on a standard turbo????
 
By making it spin too fast.

Torque is probably the easier bit as it is simply PSI but BHP has to besustained PSI through the rev range.

A turbo is a pump. The faster it spins the more it pumps. The first problem is stopping it from pumping too much at low rpm (what the wastegate does) the second problem is getting it to keep up with the engine at high rpm. Getting it wrong at low rpm bends con rods, getting it wrong at high rpm mullers the turbo from what I can gather.

in which case why do tuners stop at around 220bhp if theres plenty more to be had, even S3's with a KO4 still fall short of 300bhp yet they were getting 330bhp out of a KO3, I don't understand

Don't know if you guys are old enough or sad enough to remember the early days of PC's. You could overclock chips to make them run faster but ran the risk of them overheating,etc etc.

Same thing with engines. Getting a 1.8 to make 1000BHP for 10 minutes is easy but getting it to make 300BHP for 50,000 miles is more of a problem.

Tuning is a question of finding the weak points and improving them - to start with this is definately the mapping then the boost the turbo can give versus the pressure the engine can sustain.
