will a ScanGauge II / TurboGauge 3 work on my 1999 A3 ?

Probably but get VCDS (VAG-COM) or a Liquid gauge instead

i don't want to spend £230 on a gauge to be honest, the ScanGauge are only £100

I must admit, it lacks a lot of functionality when compared to the liquid gauge - and I mean a lot - but for £100, that's not bad!
