Survival Tablet

Firstly as you have guessed from the images this isn’t the ultimate cure for the night after a heavy drinking session or in fact any kind of aurally taken pill. This is in fact the latest product for all of you who want to go rushing around the mountains or country side and feel a little self-conscious about pulling out your Ipad. It’s a little like going to the beach and putting on a suit or a ball gown. All these consumer based tablets are, let’s face it well a just a little too delicate for the great outdoors. What is needed is a rough tough version that can be dropped covered in mud, works with your gloves on and charges from a built in solar panel. Not to mention that if while you are in the Tesco’s car park you should be hit by an avalanche there is also an emergency beacon built in so you will be found and rescued. Based on the Android operating system the Earl Backcountry Survival Tablet is the solution to all those annoying outdoor it problems.

Working together with cutting-edge motion, force and orientation sensors, Earl’s GPS chipset gives you precise reading of your location, direction and elevation.   Combine Earl with and have access to over 300,000 trails at your fingertips. Connect ANT+ or Bluetooth 4.0 devices to measure your heart rate, pace and cadence. Share your routes with friends using Android Beam™ technology.

Always stay ahead of mother nature using Earl’s internal weather sensors to accurately forecast changing conditions, even in the most remote locations. View current temperature, humidity and barometric pressure at a glance. Measure wind speed and direction using Earl’s built in micro anemometer and compass. Using GPS, Earl can tell you when and where the sun, moon and stars will shine the brightest.

Keeping in touch in the backcountry can be imperative. Earl includes a two-way radio to keep you connected, no matter where you are. Featuring a FRS, GMRS and MURS transceiver, Earl connects to analog and digital radio frequencies up to 20 miles away. Send secure text or voice messages via Walkie-Talkie; even transmit weather, location, and route information. Signal for help, report fires or alert your group to changing conditions.

Featuring a built in AM/FM/SW/LW radio tuner, Earl lets you listen to the world no matter where you are. Live pause or schedule recordings on a truly worldwide emergency radio. Using SAME (Specific Area Message Encoding), be alerted to changing conditions over NOAA weather channels. Waterproof and magnet free, the built in 1-watt speaker leaves you free to enjoy the moment no matter what you encounter.

Always prepared. Earl works with thousands of Android apps already available. With support for EPUB, MOBI and PDF e-reader formats, have access to all your favorite reads while you’re on the trail. Developers will have access to a range of new sensors to create apps and interactive guidebooks built specifically for Earl using our open api. Upload, share and sell your creations through Earl’s gear shop.

While I might be a little flippant about this product I’m sure for the people who need and rely on these type of products it looks like a very cool bit of kit. It also is yet another cool product that has been back by the use of crowd funding. All the best to them and I hope they do hit the target they are looking for so this product does make it to market.
